Black & White Photography Guidebook
Black Dog Media

The Black and White Photography Guidebook is a magazine that includes the history of photography, information on gear and other tips and tricks for photographers. This is a great resource for anyone looking to deepen their knowledge on not only photography history but also new things to try within their own photography. This magazine is part of Black Dog Media’s Independent Manual Series. The different article entries do not give credit to the author(s). The table of contents shows 8 main sections: black and white photography (including the origin and development of photography), an essential gear guide, getting started in black and white, portrait photography, mono landscape photography, abstract black and white photography, printing and digital editing tutorials. This issue was published in 2021 and according to their website there is a photography edition out every month covering different facets of photography. The table of contents breaks down each section into subsections making it easier to get to the information you want. There is also a glossary in the back. I would classify this as a magazine, not necessarily a guidebook. (I would qualify Ansel Adams’ 3 book series The Camera, The Negative and The Print as guidebooks because they literally walk you through the process step-by-step. Within the history part of the magazine they give a succinct history of the camera obscura and then a brief history of the development of the technology from daguerreotype to digital cameras. This magazine is another pretty technical guide that I could see an older highschooler to adult using to learn a bit of the history of photography before diving deeper into using black and white photography. This resource was listed as another suggested title when I found Our America.
